IELTS Mock Test in Kuwait: How to Practise Under Real Exam Conditions

In this article

An IELTS mock test is a full practice exam taken under real exam timing: Listening, Reading and Writing back to back, plus a Speaking interview. In Kuwait you have two options. You can use the free official practice tests from IELTS, the British Council and IDP at home. Or you can sit a full timed mock at a training centre, where a trainer marks your Writing and Speaking against the official band descriptors. Free online tests tell you your Listening and Reading level. To know where your Writing and Speaking really stand, the two skills that keep most candidates below their target, you need a human to mark them.

This guide explains what a proper mock includes, which free tests are worth your time, how far to trust a mock score, and how to use one to raise your band before test day.

What Does a Full IELTS Mock Test Include?

A useful mock copies the real test as closely as possible: same sections, same order, same timing, no pauses. Anything less is practice, which is valuable, but it is not a mock.

SectionTimeWhat you do
ListeningAbout 30 minutes4 recordings, 40 questions. Each recording is played once.
Reading60 minutes3 long texts (Academic) or a series of shorter workplace and everyday texts (General Training), 40 questions. No extra time to transfer answers.
Writing60 minutesTask 1 (150+ words) and Task 2 (250+ words). Task 2 counts double.
Speaking11 to 14 minutesA face-to-face interview in three parts, recorded. Often on the same day, sometimes a different day.

Listening, Reading and Writing run back to back, with no breaks between them, for about two and a half hours. That is the main reason to sit a full mock at least once: most candidates have never concentrated for that long in English, and their Writing falls apart in the last hour.

Free Official IELTS Practice Tests

Start with material from the organisations that set the test. Third-party "IELTS tests" online are often the wrong length, the wrong difficulty, or simply wrong.

  • IELTS.org sample test questions — official sample questions for every section, for both Academic and General Training.
  • British Council free practice tests — timed Listening, Reading and Writing tests, with answers for Listening and Reading.
  • IDP computer familiarisation tests — untimed versions of the real computer-delivered test screens. Every IELTS venue in Kuwait currently delivers the test on computer, so this is worth doing once.
  • IDP IELTS preparation — free practice materials and webinars from IDP, which also runs IELTS test centres in Kuwait.
  • IELTS Trial Test — a free Listening, Reading and Writing test, Academic or General Training, marked by an official IELTS examiner, with results in 13 days. It is taken in person at participating locations, so ask IDP or the British Council whether one is running in Kuwait. It does not include Speaking and is not an official score.

Two habits make free tests far more useful. First, time yourself strictly, and do not pause the audio. Second, if you will sit the computer-delivered test, do your practice on a screen too. Reading a long passage on a monitor and typing your essay are skills of their own.

Free Online Test or Full Mock: Which Do You Need?

Most people need both: free tests every week for practice, and one or two full marked mocks to check progress.

How Accurate Is a Mock Test Score?

A good mock gives you a reliable range, not a guaranteed band. Listening and Reading are the most predictable because they are marked out of 40 and converted to a band. IELTS publishes these reference points, the approximate number of correct answers needed for each band:

Correct answers (out of 40)ListeningAcademic ReadingGeneral Training Reading
15–16Band 5 at 16Band 5 at 15Band 4 at 15
23Band 6Band 6Band 5
30Band 7Band 7Band 6
35Band 8Band 8Band 7

The exact mark varies slightly from one test version to another, so treat these as approximate. Notice that General Training Reading needs more correct answers for the same band, because its texts are easier.

Writing and Speaking mock scores are only as good as the person marking them. A mock marked by a trainer who works with the official band descriptors every day is a good indicator, but treat it as a range rather than a promise. If your mock Writing score is a full band below your target, take that seriously. It is the most common reason candidates resit.

When Should You Take an IELTS Mock Test?

  1. At the start, as a diagnostic. Before you plan your study, find out which skill is furthest from your target. Many candidates in Kuwait spend weeks on Listening when the gap is Writing.
  2. Halfway through your preparation. To check the plan is working, and to change it if it is not.
  3. One to two weeks before the real test. Close enough to be accurate, far enough out to fix one last weakness.

If your final mock is more than half a band below the score you need, it is usually cheaper to move your test date than to pay for a resit. Check the rescheduling rules when you book: our guide to taking the IELTS test in Kuwait covers fees, booking and changing dates.

How to Review a Mock Test (the Part Most People Skip)

The score is the least useful thing a mock gives you. The review is where the band comes from.

  • Keep an error log. For every wrong Listening and Reading answer, write down why: misheard a number, spelling, ran out of time, misunderstood the question type. After two or three mocks a pattern appears, and it is usually one or two question types.
  • Rewrite one essay. Take your mock Task 2 and the trainer's feedback, and rewrite it within 40 minutes. Compare the two.
  • Listen to your Speaking recording. Most candidates are surprised by how often they pause or repeat the same phrases.
  • Check your timing. Did you finish Reading? Did Task 1 take more than 20 minutes? Timing problems are the easiest band to win back.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a free IELTS mock test?

Yes. IELTS, the British Council and IDP all publish free official practice tests online. They are reliable for Listening and Reading, but they do not mark your Writing or assess your Speaking. The free IELTS Trial Test does have your Writing marked by an official examiner, but it is taken in person at participating locations and does not include Speaking.

How long does an IELTS mock test take?

A full mock takes the same time as the real test: about 2 hours 45 minutes in total. Listening, Reading and Writing take about two and a half hours without breaks, and the Speaking interview takes 11 to 14 minutes.

How many mock tests should I take before IELTS?

Two or three full, marked mocks is enough for most candidates: one at the start to diagnose, one midway, and one a week or two before the test. Do shorter section practice in between rather than more full mocks.

Is a mock test score the same as the real IELTS score?

Not exactly. Listening and Reading mock scores are usually close to the real result, because they are marked out of 40. Writing and Speaking depend on how well the marker knows the band descriptors. Treat a mock as a range rather than a promise.

Should I practise on paper or on a computer?

Practise in the format you will sit. If you have booked computer-delivered IELTS, do your Reading and Writing practice on a screen and type your essays. Typing speed and reading on a monitor both affect your score.

Can I take an IELTS mock test online from Kuwait?

Yes. The free official practice tests are online, and REG runs online IELTS classes for students who cannot attend a branch. Ask us how mock tests work for online students.
