You can take PTE Academic in Kuwait. You book it through Pearson's online account, myPTE, which also shows the test centres open in Kuwait and the current fee. The test is entirely computer-based, lasts about two hours, and is scored from 10 to 90. Results usually arrive within two days. Before you book, check which PTE you need. Australia and UK visas accept PTE Academic. Canada's Express Entry accepts only PTE Core. The UK nursing regulator accepts neither.
This guide covers booking, fees, the test format after the August 2025 update, scoring, and how PTE compares with IELTS for the most common destinations from Kuwait.
Pearson runs several versions, and they are not interchangeable.
| Version | Used for |
|---|---|
| PTE Academic | University admission, Australian visas, Australian professional registration (including nursing through Ahpra), New Zealand |
| PTE Academic UKVI | UK visas that require a Secure English Language Test |
| PTE Core | Canadian economic immigration, including Express Entry. IRCC accepts PTE Core only, not PTE Academic |
Nurses heading to the UK: PTE is not an option. The Nursing and Midwifery Council accepts only IELTS Academic and OET. See OET vs IELTS for nurses for the scores you need.
Pearson does not publish a fixed list of Kuwait test centres outside its booking system. To see the centres currently open and their next available dates, start a booking on the PTE book-now page and search for Kuwait. Pearson opened its first Kuwait centre with UK International in 2012, and test-booking sites currently list centres in Salmiya and Mahboula, but treat myPTE as the only reliable source.
Test-centre listings also show that PTE Core may not be available in Kuwait. If you need PTE Core for Canada, check availability on myPTE before you plan around it. IELTS General Training is the alternative Canada accepts, and it is widely available here.
Pearson shows the Kuwait price, in US dollars, during booking. It does not publish a public Kuwait price list. Recent third-party listings put PTE Academic in the Middle East at around USD 270–275, but fees change, so go by the price myPTE shows you at checkout. Rescheduling and cancellation charges depend on how much notice you give, and the terms are shown when you book.
The test takes about two hours and is in three parts. It changed on 7 August 2025, when Pearson added two speaking tasks, bringing the total to 22 question types (Pearson, July 2025).
| Part | Time | Task types |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Speaking and Writing | 76–84 minutes | Personal Introduction (not scored), Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Retell Lecture, Answer Short Question, Summarize Group Discussion (new), Respond to a Situation (new), Summarize Written Text, Write Essay |
| 2. Reading | 23–30 minutes | Reading and Writing Fill in the Blanks, Multiple Choice (multiple answers), Reorder Paragraphs, Fill in the Blanks, Multiple Choice (single answer) |
| 3. Listening | 31–39 minutes | Summarize Spoken Text, Multiple Choice (multiple answers), Fill in the Blanks, Highlight Correct Summary, Multiple Choice (single answer), Select Missing Word, Highlight Incorrect Words, Write from Dictation |
Two things surprise first-time candidates. First, you speak into a headset in a room full of other candidates, all talking at once. Practise speaking clearly with background noise. Second, many tasks are scored for more than one skill. Write from Dictation, for example, counts toward both Listening and Writing, which is why it is worth far more of your preparation time than its few seconds on screen suggest.
You receive an overall score and a score for each skill, all from 10 to 90. Since the 2025 update, the content of seven task types is marked by trained human raters alongside Pearson's AI scoring. Results arrive within two days in almost all cases, and occasionally take up to five. A score report is valid for two years, although each organisation decides how old a score it will accept (Pearson scoring help).
Australian visas. Since 7 August 2025, Home Affairs sets minimum PTE scores per skill, not an overall score (LIN 25/016):
| English level | PTE Listening | PTE Reading | PTE Writing | PTE Speaking | IELTS (each skill) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vocational | 33 | 36 | 29 | 24 | 5.0 |
| Competent | 47 | 48 | 51 | 54 | 6.0 |
| Proficient | 58 | 59 | 69 | 76 | 7.0 |
| Superior | 69 | 70 | 85 | 88 | 8.0 |
Before August 2025, Competent English meant 50 in each PTE skill. If you are reading older advice, check the date.
Nursing in Australia. For tests taken on or after 23 April 2026, Ahpra requires PTE Academic overall 63, with at least Listening 58, Reading 59, Writing 60 and Speaking 76. The IELTS Academic equivalent is 7.0 overall with 6.5 in Writing and 7.0 in the others. The Speaking 76 is the score most nurses find hardest.
Which is easier? Neither, for everyone. PTE suits candidates who type quickly, are comfortable with a computer and like fast results. IELTS suits those who prefer speaking to a person rather than a microphone, and it is accepted for more purposes, including UK nursing registration. If you are undecided, take a free practice test in each and compare how you feel. Our IELTS in Kuwait guide covers IELTS fees and booking.
REG's PTE course in Kuwait covers every task type, with focused Speaking and Writing practice and full-length simulated exams under real test conditions. It runs online and at our Salmiya, Jaleeb Al-Shuyoukh and Mangaf branches.
